RHWM? What division is that?

This must have been a critical money issue to be so heartless as to lay them off just before Christmas. I guess with the reduction in rad work the folks at Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management (RHWM) Division were easy pickens to be laid off. We all need to realize with funding in short supply you will be targeted to be laid off when there is less demand for the work you perform. Once 332 is reclassified, a significant number of programmatic, security, safety, waste, and others personnel working on tasks associated with or supporting efforts at 332 will no longer be needed. And it won’t stop there…

Wonderful. I wonder who else is on the hits list? Please past as you get the facts.

Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management. Use to be under the Environmental Protection Dept, but was moved under the new Nuclear Operations Dept. created by LLNS/Bechtel. Bad move - now both RHWM and EPD are a mess.

Googling LLNL and RHWM yeilds: Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management

This is serious. Do you have any details about the 3 million dollar screw up you can share? Is this just Hazardous Waste Management or will fte's in other organizations be laid-off as well? How many more? Did their managers see this coming or was it a sudden thing that took them by surprise? Were they 500's 300's or 200's...? Any details you can provide would be appreciated, and possibly help others prepare. Thanks for sharing this!

With this layoff, RHWM gets top heavier. Not fair.

OPS PAD is planning something; There are management meetings (not even in Meeting Maker) where budget is the topic.
I dont know exactly what but you will see some Flexs let go by March, if what I heard is correct.

Were they real FTEs or Flex Terms?

This is just the beginning. As the Lab collapses on itself, this will become routine.

Heartless? This is the way Rechtel does business.

If they had waited till after the holidays, these people would have been paid for at least 4 days they had off, plus several days when no one at the Lab was really working anyway.

Making more room for Superblock rodents as the nonsense over there winds down!

From the outside looking in, I must say, in all honesty, that people from "Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management" would be about the last people I would lay off. The entire management chain would go first.
Should something happen, I hope the City of Livermore forgives LLNL.

This is just the beginning. The Lab is doing a lot less hazardous work than it did 10 years ago, which means a lot less hazardous waste is being generated today. Also when SNM is removed from 332, the rumor is up to a 50% cut in FTEs supporting/running Superblock. LLNL will soon be a "non-hazardous" site and look a lot more like LBNL than LANL. The need to continue doing classified work will keep tech/cyber security busy, but the uniformed guard force will be cut in half, just look at the huge hit Hazards Control Dept and ES&H took.

Merry Christmas Livermore.

Face it, Livermore is no longer a secure place for a career since the "for-profit" Bechtel Boys took over. This lab is now being run by a CONSTRUCTION company, for goodness sakes!

Get out if you can. There are much better and saner research institutions than the dieing NNSA weapon labs. Why keep working hard to put money into Riley Bechtel's family bank account?

Well its been two years and to tell you the truth I'm surprised the working force hasn't been cut to 4000 people. Rectal's normal mode of operation is to cut the work force by 50% within the first two years, hire all their own types on an at will basis and then sh-t can's them after they've burned them out just as NIF does.

I thought a month ago GM said no layoffs in this year? This was like the last layoffs. Bet no managers were in this batch either because of course we have too few managers.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps when George stated there would be no layoffs, he was thinking of no layoffs in numbers that would trigger the WARN act.

Or perhaps he meant that there would be no layoffs for upper managers.

Possibly he thought we were not listening. Given the numbers of empty seats in the B123 auditorium when he gives his talks, perhaps we aren't listening anymore.

If the truth we to be told...well I guess we'll never know about that, will we?

"Rectal's normal mode of operation is to cut the work force by 50% within the first two years"

Could you name places where this has happened?

LLNL's been a joke even under UC. It's chain of command is nothing more then an upside down Pyramid bloated at the top with hundreds if not thousands of overpaid worthless managers leave a hand full of people to do the work and carry their butts who get no recognition or pay raises to speak of. If NNSA wants production out of LLNL they need to cut 90% of the managers and their wages by no less then 50%, taking that money to increase the workers wages. I wouldn't recommend going to work at LLNL or LANL for any reason. They need to close their doors forever, immediately.

Wash, rinse and repeat. It's the corporate way of doing things. Layoffs will be a constant theme at the "new and improved" Livermore under Bechtel management. Anything to put a few extra bucks into the back pocket of Riley Bechtel and his "family".

Almost every place they have set their hands on. Use Google if you know how and check out their track record. This facts been known since the transition took place. I wouldn't expect much from these people at all, except the boot after they abuse you to the max.

I do remember at one of the NIF's all hands meeting with EM he said, "we will continue to lay off 10% a year as long as NIF exist". No good news with that comments for anyone under 62 years old.

I'm very accomplished with computers and Google - but haven't had any luck.

You seem to know about this things, so please provide specifics.

Thanks in advance.

And there you have it Rechtal doing what it does best. There will be more to come in about a year or less. I wonder if that's what Brotha GM is going to drop on us this week with his all hands or is it more of telling us how great LLNL came out on it score so Rechtal can get their $89M + for doing such as SH job of screwing us over.
