Any positives on UC?

A previous poster asked if anyone could give one positive contribution from UC to LANL in the past 20 years. No one listed any. Sure there are lots of negative ones from UC as well as from other partners. Are there any UC positives? Any at all??

Saves money, brings scientist expertise, top talent, international credibility, good reputation.

Not much listed above other than motherhood and apple pie statements.

From my experience at LLNL, I can think of a some specifics where UC went to the mat for the right things.

The first was when Jessica Stern came to some politically-sensitive conclusions that DOE didn't care for, and UC very publicly backed her up in the name of academic freedom even though she was "just a post-doc." That was in the early 1990's, as I recall. Stern is now a distinguished professor in the Boston area.

The second was when some stuffed-shirt admiral seconded to DOE didn't like the way the Tritium Facility was operating and demanded the Facility Manager be fired on the spot. UC and the Lab Director told him to pound sand, and made it stick. The FM went on to have a very productive and impactful career at LLNL before she retired.

UC pushed and led the development of the Seaborg Institutes at LLNL, LBNL, and LANL. Good decision, long-term positive impact on the three labs.

UC got rid of Walp, Dorn, and made Mantano look bad. Sure these only small things yes but still very positive.

It's Walp and Doran, not "Dorn". They sued LANL (run by UC at the time) and won a huge settlement. UC had to pay Walp almost a million dollars. UC/LANL made a public statement that they had fired Walp and Doran inappropriately.

Funny, the nutcase troll in his feckless attempt to defend UC actually called out another case of UC's ineptitude.

NNSA wanted Moses removed, LLNS told them to pound sand too. It's not a UC thing, it's not setting precedent for letting an outside non-managing entity micromanage the contractor.

If you new anything about these guys or where around when they where at LANL you would understand why UC did a great thing. Not a pretty picture at all. There is a video on line of one of these guys on Fox news, go watch and tell you think these should not have been terminated instantly. Walp is by far the greater POS. A huge settlement? actually it was 904k dollars which chump change after the lawyers are done and well...well worth it to fire these guys. You know something really crazy, Walp brags about having a Phd. Do you know where that Phd is from? It is from the Ivy league school called Walden University!!!! You pay and you get in,
so guess where that little money he got from the lawsuit was wasted on. I am not kidding about this and idiot actually puts this Phd on his credentials! I will not go into details about Walden University as you can guess but suffice to say it actually has an entry on the Urban Dictionary. So no matter what you say firing Walp and Dorn was a GREAT accomplishment for UC and something they should be VERY proud of and was a service to the nation and humanity in general. As they say in the Marines OohRah!!!! You have the trio of slime with with Walp, Dorn and Montano! Did you know these guys are still going on about Richard Burick, again I am not kidding, see for yourself https://www.abqjournal.com/716428/whistleblowers-ask-u-s-attorney-for-new-probe-of-lanl-fraud-former-lab-officials-death.html I guess anything to try to stay relevant or get a buck, these guys are really effing sick people trying make money off dead people. I will give Walp and Dorn this, they certainly have more dignity, pride, and credibility than Montano but that is not saying much.

A few online tidbits about Walden, which is ironic considering what Walden is.

Walden Universitycollege

One of those diploma mill schools that sends out junk mail to try to trick you into thinking that it is a real college.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Walden%20University

One of those diploma mill schools that sends out junk mail to try to trick you into thinking that it is a real college.

In reality, they are a real school like a cubic zirconia is a real diamond. They are to colleges like Showgirls is to fine cinema. If they were a food product, they would be a frozen TV dinner. Attending Walden University is like telling the world that your local community college was alright, but you just didn't feel like studying that hard.

The only way that you could possibly go lower than Walden University is if you didn't go at all.

A marketing company masquerading as a school. Anytime anyone says anything bad about them online a bunch of fake people, who all sound exactly the same, show up to defend it.

The school is the bottom of the barrel of accredited colleges. It is the community college of online schools. The only reason to go to Walden University is because you can't get in anywhere else.

One of the oldest diploma mills. Walden University = the degree is not worth the paper it is written on. Walden University = you won't get a job as a result of your education.

An online diploma mill masquerading as a school. They started as small non-accredited college selling degrees through the mail and have since graduating to sending people spam messages about their graduate programs. Everyone who applies will be accepted as they don’t require a GRE, SAT, or a pulse. If you can pay, you can get yourself a Walden education.

Their professors are all part-time employees who are usually employed at other colleges at teach at Walden for the extra money. All of their classes are canned and don’t really require any real learning. Just write papers and do the minimum and you’ll have a worthless degree in no time at all.

Agree with this. UC has had several positive impacts on LLNL in the past 20 years.

Not so clear that they have had any such on LANL.

1:57 PM,

I got to the end of your first sentence "If you new (sic) anything...", I recognized your pathetically poor writing and I instantly KNEW that only crazy stuff would follow. I saw the size of your post and KNEW it would be a waste of time to read.

DUH.

So you read it, got personally offended and tried to say that you didn't read it. Ok got it, but why are so personally offended? Things that make you go hmmm.

God Almighty are you crazy. Can't you read? I read the first sentence. I STILL haven't read the rest, and I don't intend to. I doubt that anyone else read it either.

Don't bother posting like you're someone else and try to defend your garbage writing. You write so badly, with so many grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, sentence flow problems, and outright crazy stuff we all know when it's you.

Posted a thoughtful comment, whereas all the rest of the stuff is garbage. That might indicate that there is just not a single positive UC contribution to LANL in the last 20 years.

Or it might indicate that you have some kind of weird personal agenda against UC. I noticed that you always avoid addressing this issue.

UC restrained from (1993 to 1997) Hazel O'Leary from completing driving the Labs into the ground with things like a salary freeze and her initiative to declassify everything.

her initiative to declassify everything.

August 30, 2017 at 3:44 AM

I was there and I can tell you it wasn't UC that prevented that. It was the cooler heads in the labs, plants, and at DOE field offices and HQ who kicked that can down the road with the help of a little-known entity called the Technical Evaluation Panel, while appearing to comply with Hazel's directive. It was beautiful to watch.

This is odd because I was there too can can tell that UC was pivotal in preventing in opposing witch Hazel, than again everyone at DOE at time was against her. People go on about Rick Perry but there has been some real winners leading DOE in the past. I remember Robert Blagojevich was really hoping he would get that job as a favor from Obama.

UC DID NOT prevent a salary freeze. We had exactly that in 93? Thanks to that monster criminal Hazel.

UC positive: they will be gone soon and take Charlie, Craig, and Terry with them.

Apparently, UC didn't restrain that b****h on the salary freeze because it occurred. Thank goodness she couldn't spend much time destroying the Labs because it interfered with her junkets to Asia, Europe, China, Japan, etc. He entourage, which included her personal French chef, occupied up an entire Boeing 747.

The worst thing about LANS, and the achilles heel (understatement) has been the LANS Board of Directors, a good ole boys club. Norm Pattiz is an absolute delusional idiot, and I'm being kind. I've listened to a few UC Regents meetings where Norm represents the Labs and he comes off as a jackass. The LANS board of Directors have been largely responsible for the failure of LANL, for one, they never fired their son, GQ. How can Nick Salazar vote to fire GQ, when he's paid and works for him? How many times did Norm come to Los Alamos....anybody, never?

Anonymous said...

It is overwhelmingly obvious that Pattiz has something on some very high people in UC, or he would have been removed long ago for abject stupidity, hubris, and just plain bad taste. Plus arrogance and overwhelming underqualifications. Something stinks here, very badly, in the UCOP office and in the Board of Regents. Stinks like this lead inevitably to discovery of something rotten, and to necessary cleaning.

Anonymous said...

UCOP and its leadership are under multiple investigations for corruption, misappropriation of state funds, obstruction of investigations, and this is just the list from the last few months. Pattiz and Budil are indicative of how UC takes the NNSA mission.

NNSA got its wish to fire Moses. They put the fix in by bringing Parney Albright in as an AD for 2 years, then made him the first "outsider" Director in LLNL history. Parney then proceeded to wait until the political assassination of Moses was in full mode then fired Moses on false premises with NNSA backing....Not to much later Parney "resigned" under some false story about him pissing off someone in DC.....Pure Kabuki Theater designed by NNSA.

"Agree with this. UC has had several positive impacts on LLNL...."

Least we forget, UC allowed the Davis campus to move the Department of Applied Science to the Livermore site (in the Red area). The 50 or so graduate students at any one time worked in physics/engineering programs on-site. Also across the street at Sandia National Laboratory. And up the freeway to the UC Berkeley campus. Livermore/Sandia got some talented Masters and PhD's out of these programs, many of whom continue to have a large impact today. Also Teller's major presence at the Department of Applied Science brought many noted world class scientists to Livermore to give inspiring lectures. I still remember the talks on climate change(ice ball Earth, Mars-like Earth and Venus-like Earth) at least a decade before this ever became a big deal.

Why was any of this stuff ever talked about in Livermore. Livermore does bombs not science, there is no ice balls, Mars, or Venus or any thing like that with bombs. You do not need to know how electrons vibrate, the big bang, black holes or any of that kind of crap. You need applied science, some engineering and mostly production. Who is this Teller guy you are going on about and why would he want to bring in world class scientists to LLNL? Again we do bombs that is all NNSA should do and can do, you don't need a University running a factory so why do we need UC? This is not rocket science folks.

September 5, 2017 at 3:23 PM

The anti-science guy who thinks nuclear weapons just "explode" like "bombs" and no science need be involved. No knowledge whatsoever, but secure in his beliefs. Arrogance and ignorance combined. Is that what LLNL is breeding these days? Or is it just what LLNL is leaving on the trash heap, unfortunately still alive (ish)?

" Who is this Teller guy you are going on about and why would he want to bring in world class scientists to LLNL? "

Truly an ignorant comment. Dr. Edward Teller was the founder of the Livermore Lab and the inventor of the H-bomb. You know the one the North Koreans are trying to re-invent as we speak. He was also by any measure one of the most important physicists in the greatest generation of physicists, both before and after WWII.
